About Josephine

The picture (right) "One Fine Day In Dundee"  won Josephine the 2009 Harry Vaughan Cup, awarded to the best painting with a Dundee theme.

Josephine Gillespie was born in Iloilo City in the Philippines where she grew up and studied, graduating with a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering.  She and her husband moved to Newport-on-Tay,  a small village on the North coast of Fife, by the River Tay, in Scotland in 1989.  Josephine started painting in 1991 at the Forgan Art Centre under the tuition of renowned local artist Jean Martin.  After a promising start, Josephine took a break to raise two daughters and establish a small  business as a self-employed seamstress, returning to Forgan in 2000 to study under Liz Yule, winner of the TV's  Watercolour Challenge competition.  In 2006 Josephine attended an Art Masterclass at Dundee College, one day a week, with Jean Martin and Angus McEwan, and from 2006-2009 she has attended an evening class in life drawing, also with Jean and Angus.

Josephine is a versatile artist working in a variety of media including watercolour, acrylic, pastel and mixed media.  Her favourite subjects are figures, trees, and coastal village scenes.  She is an accomplished portrait artist who has received a number of commissions from people living throughout Fife, Tayside and further afield.  Josephine also makes jewellery from "friendly plastic" to her own unique designs and does intricate glass beadwork.

In 2008, for the first time, Josephine exhibited her paintings and jewellery at the famous annual Pittenweem Art Festival in the first week of August of each year.

Josephine is a member of both the Dundee Art Society and the Cupar Art Club.
